Why Instagram is not about Vanity Metrics

Let’s be honest, we’ve all been wanting to “crack” Instagram’s algorithm and get tons of likes and shares on our posts. Well, that tactic has not proven to be successful. Instagram is not about vanity metrics, it’s about showing your content to the right people and making sure they engage with what you have to say as a brand/product.

Instagram can feel sometimes as an ego booster rather than a platform that can help you turn your followers into customers. As a business owner, you have so much to worry about that getting it right on Instagram should not be about likes but about ROI.

Making it on Insta is about learning some best practices and combining this with your own intuition. Before thinking of “What should I post today?”, ask yourself “What is the goal of this post”?

Defining the goal and purpose of your post will help you determine what to post. Do you aim to educate, entertain, surprise your audience?

Try to reverse engineer and instead of choosing a photo and and come up with a caption, choose your goal and what you want to achieve with that post.

Once you know what the aim for that post is, try to fit it into a category that will fit your brand and create a deeper connection with your audience.

Your pillars/categories can include:

  • What you sell (product/service)

  • Hobbies

  • Interests

  • Your team

  • Customer testimonials

You get the drill? Any subject that will help connect you to your ideal clients. By categorising your posts and defining your goals, not only will your feed look more consistent but also you’ll show your audience that your brand is versatile and not only tries to “sell”. As your business evolves and grows over time, so will your categories and things you want to share with your followers.

Don’t be afraid to post something new. Remember Instagram is also about having fun and the more you inspire and connect to your audience the better results (engagement) you’ll achieve.
